NSW: Australians commemorate Anzacs at dawn service
Tens of thousands of Australians have gathered to remember those who fought and diedfor Australia in Anzac Day dawn services across the country.
The Last Post rang out just before sunrise, 87 years after the landing of Australianand New Zealand troops on the shores of the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey.
The crowd at the National War Memorial in Canberra is believed to be one of the biggestin history.
The dawn service overseen by the Administrator of the Commonwealth of Australia SirGUY GREEN in Governor-General Peter Hollingworth's absence, who is in Gallipoli.
When the sun rises on Gallipoli, at about 1 pm (AEST) our time, Dr HOLLINGWORTH willaddress a dawn service attended by about 10,000 Australians and New Zealanders.
The Australian Army's principal chaplain PETER WOODWARD says this year's commemorationis particularly poignant with Australian soldiers fighting the war on terrorism in Afghanistan.
In Sydney, up to 15,000 gathered at the Martin Place Cenotaph to pay respects to thesoldiers who fought in the devastating eight-month campaign in 1915.
Federal Veterans Affairs Minister DANNA VALE says Anzac Day gave Australians a chanceto touch base with the real meaning of nationhood.
