CASE TRIGGERS INVESTIGATION STATE KEEPS REGISTRY OF HEALTH WORKERS WITH AIDS.(Main)

There are 718 recorded cases of New York state health-care workers having AIDS, but Dr. Philip Feldman of Long Island is the first one that has triggered a state investigation because of concerns about his infection control techniques.

Potential lapses in universal precautions against infection "set this apart from other HIV-infected health care workers," said Peter Slocum, the Health Department's chief spokesman, on Wednesday.

Because of the state's strict confidentiality laws, Slocum stopped short of explicitly confirming Feldman died of AIDS last month.
