NSW:New leads in fake bomb case

It appears there's a couple of leads in last week's fake bomb case, in which a teenage
student was strapped for 10 hours to a device in Sydney's lower north shore.

News Ltd reports fingerprints have been found on parts of the device which was strapped
to MADELEINE PULVER'S neck in her Mosman home last Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Channel Nine reports that staff at Mosman's Buena Vista Hotel noticed a
man dressed in dark clothing acting anxiously in the pub that afternoon saying he became
more stressed and ran out when police cars sped past the hotel towards the PULVERS' home.

Footage from the hotel's security cameras shows the man, but police haven't confirmed
the new lead.

SA: Masked parents protest changes to adoption

AAP General News (Australia)

SA: Masked parents protest changes to adoption

ADELAIDE, Feb 17 AAP - Adoptive parents donned surgical and masquerade masks today
to protest changes to South Australia's adoption laws.

About 100 people wore masks, amid fears of being fined up to $20,000 if they were identified
during media coverage of the protest.

Under SA law, it is an offence to publish details that can identify adopted children
or their parents.

The protesters called on the state government to reverse its decision to make the Families
and Communities Department the sole agency responsible for overseeing inter-country adoptions.

Currently, adoptions are handled by a licensed non-government agency.

Adoptive parents criticised the move, which the government has said would make adoptions
quicker and simpler.

"Adoption is an emotional process ... it's about mums and dads just wanting to be mums
and dads," one woman said.

"I just don't think the government is going to provide that emotional support."

Family and Community Services Minister Jay Weatherill said the decision was made in
light of a higher rate of child abuse notifications among adopted children and the high
number of placement breakdowns in SA compared with other states.

"This is about making sure that I can be satisfied the children's best interests are
served through the adoption process and that can only be achieved through a government
agency," he said.

SA couples adopt overseas children at a higher rate per capita than any other state.

A total of 72 children from countries such as China, India, Ethiopia, Thailand, Taiwan,
Hong Kong, the Philippines and South Korea were adopted in SA in 2003-04.

There were only six local adoptions.

About 230 SA couples are currently in the process of adopting a child from overseas.

Fenwick and West Releases Angel/Seed Financing Survey

Fenwick and West Releases Angel/Seed Financing Survey
Type: News

Fenwick and West, a law firm, released its first Angel/Seed Financing Survey.

In a release, the Firm noted the survey covers 52 internet/ digital media and software companies that raised angel/seed financing in the Silicon Valley or Seattle markets in 2010. For purposes of the survey, an angel/seed financing is the first round of financing of a company in which it raised between $250,000 and $2 million and is led by a professional investor.
"In 2002, we began publishing our Venture Capital Survey in response to the change in market conditions resulting from the burst of the 'dot-com bubble' and a desire to provide the entrepreneurial community with objective information about the status of the venture environment," said Barry Kramer, a partner in the firm's Corporate Group.

"We believe that in recent years, the angel/seed financing environment has undergone significant changes for mostly unrelated reasons, especially in the internet/digital media and software industries, where entrepreneurs can develop and begin commercializing products with less resources than other industries. As a result we decided to develop and publish a survey to analyze market conditions and changes in that environment."

Results of the survey include:

-Seed stage funds led 45 percent of the financings, individual angels led 31 percent of the financings and venture capital funds led 24 percent of the financings.

-A percentage of the financings were structured as preferred stock financings as opposed to convertible note financings, and those that were structured as convertible note financings capped the conversion price in substantially over a majority of the financings.

-The median amount raised in preferred stock financings was $1.1 million, and $0.6 million in convertible note financings.

-The median pre-money valuation for preferred stock financings was $3.4 million for internet/digital media financings and $2.7 million for software financings.

-Investors received a board seat in approximately 70 percent of preferred stock financings, but in less than 10 percent of convertible note financings.

"We believe these results are consistent with our anecdotal observation that angel financings have become more sophisticated and larger in the internet/digital media and software industries in recent years, as the class of investors between friends and family investors and traditional venture capital has developed and expanded," said Steve Levine, who is also an attorney in the firm's Corporate Group. "We view this as a healthy response to changing market conditions, and intend to continue to follow these trends."

NSW: NSW records highest number of road fatalities over Easter

AAP General News (Australia)

NSW: NSW records highest number of road fatalities over Easter

SYDNEY, April 14 AAP - NSW recorded the highest Easter road toll in the country, pushed
to six by the death of a teenager who drowned when her car washed off a flooded causeway.

A total of 15 people died across Australia over the long weekend, and of the six road
deaths in NSW, half were pedestrians.

The result contrasts with last Easter, when no fatalities were recorded on NSW roads.

Traffic Services Commander Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said this year Operation
Tortoise netted 575 motorists for drink driving offences, 5,784 for speeding and 8,938
other for offences such as using mobile phones and not wearing seatbelts.

The number of motorists caught speeding was 317 more than last year, but drink driving
offences dropped by 58, he said.

But Mr Hartley said police would be reviewing strategies after the alcohol-related
deaths of three pedestrians.

"I think there needs to be a fair bit of education regarding pedestrians and furthermore,
pedestrians and alcohol safety," Mr Hartley told reporters in Sydney.

"We see a pattern there of pedestrians late at night, dark roads not being illuminated
and they step out in front of vehicles."

While the higher Easter road toll in NSW was a concern, Mr Hartley said crashes causing
death or serious injury were down 20 or 30 per cent.

But the Operation Tortoise statistics - with more than 15,000 motorists were caught
breaking the law - proved motorists continued to ignore road safety warnings.

"It's beyond my comprehension that despite all the warnings of speeding, drink driving
and not wearing seatbelts, people continue to act up behind the wheel and play Russian
roulette with their lives," Mr Hartley said.

A 19-year-old woman was the last to lose her life on NSW roads this Easter, drowning
after driving into a flooded causeway about 14km east of Cootamundra, in the state's south
east, about 9pm (AEST) on Monday.

Her 22-year-old passenger managed to swim to safety and was picked up by a truck driver.

On Sunday, a 31-year-old man died when his truck crashed on Weabonga Road at Ogunbil,
near Tamworth, in central NSW.

In Sydney, a 16-year-old boy in the passenger of an allegedly stolen car was killed
when it crashed on Thursday.

NSW Police Minister Tony Kelly said drivers and pedestrians should remain vigilant
for the rest of the school holidays.

"Now is not the time to become complacent," he said.

Five people were killed on Queensland roads while Victoria, Western Australia, the
ACT and Tasmania recorded one fatality each.

South Australia and the Northern Territory were fatality free.

Qld: Missing Chinese girl phones home: police

By Rosemary Desmond

BRISBANE, Feb 11 AAP - A missing 14-year-old Chinese girl who disappeared in Brisbane
more than a week ago has called her mother in China, police say.

Can Zhou arrived in Queensland late last month as part of a tour group from China on
a two-week study tour.

She was last seen at 7.30am (AEST) on Saturday, February 2, leaving an address at Brighton
on Brisbane's northern bayside, where she was billeted.

Can speaks very limited English and has no known links to people in Queensland.

Queensland police today said they spoke to Can Zhou's mother yesterday. She told them
her daughter had called her on Saturday night.

"Although her mother said Can Zhou sounded safe and well, she was unable to provide
us with any information as to her daughter's exact whereabouts," North Brisbane District
Superintendent Col Campbell said.

"There is no evidence at this time to suggest Can Zhou is in any immediate danger and
we believe she is most likely being looked after by someone in the south-east corner of
Queensland,

"However, police still need to locate the girl to verify this."

The study tour group, which arrived on January 31, departed Australia to return to
China yesterday.

Can Zhou's visa is current until February 21.

Police have appealed for anyone with information on her whereabouts to contact police.

"It is very concerning to us that this young girl is missing in an unfamiliar country,
but we know that someone can tell us where she is," Supt Campbell said.

Can Zhou is described as being 120cm tall, with a slim build, black hair and brown eyes.

She was last seen wearing a white knee-length skirt and black and white striped shirt
with a white short-sleeved jacket, blue and black slip-on sandals and a dark-coloured
handbag.

NSW: Jail for man who shot grandfather dead in backyard

NSW: Jail for man who shot grandfather dead in backyard

SYDNEY, Aug 24 AAP - A 23-year-old Sydney man who killed his grandfather in a backyard,
execution-style murder will serve up to 20 years in jail.

The NSW Supreme Court heard today that Ernest Richard (Dick) Clark, a Granville shop
owner, lay unconscious in his backyard for almost two hours before being found covered
in blood by his partner.

He was rushed to hospital where he died the following day.

Ben Richard Clark, the man's grandson, subsequently pleaded guilty to his murder.

The court was told that after spending the evening watching football and drinking beer
together on April 29, 2005, Ben Clark walked with his grandfather into the backyard of
the 74-year-old's Bexley home, where he shot him twice.

Clark alleged he had been the victim of verbal, physical and sexual abuse at the hands
of his grandfather and that he killed him when he "couldn't take it anymore".

During today's sentencing, Acting Judge David Patten said he did not accept the claims
of sexual abuse, conceding only that Clark may have endured verbal taunts and the odd
"push".

"The offender shot and killed in a style of an execution without rational explanation
in a cold-blooded, callous and merciless manner," Judge Patten said.

"If it were not for his age, a sentence of life would have to be considered."

Judge Patten said the community expected suitably strong punishment for the act which
showed "a very high degree of criminality".

Clark was sentenced to 20 years' jail with a non-parole period of 14 years.

With time already served, Clark will be eligible for parole on July 13, 2019 at the earliest.

Clark's father, Michael Rex Clark - the victim's son - is expected to face trial early
next year for his involvement in the killing.

NSW: Customs nab another man with drugs down pants

SYDNEY, Dec 8 AAP - A Canadian man accused of trying to smuggle a kilogram of cocaine
into Australia in his boxer shorts will appear in a Sydney court today.

Customs officers stopped the 35-year-old at Sydney Airport after he arrived on a flight
from Vancouver yesterday, Australian Federal Police (AFP) said.

During questioning, officers became suspicious he may have been concealing drugs and
conducted a frisk search.

The man then allegedly produced a package hidden in his pants, which allegedly tested
positive as cocaine.

He was charged by the AFP with attempting to import a marketable quantity of a border-controlled
drug under the Criminal Code Act 1995.

The maximum penalty is a $550,000 fine and/or 25 years in prison.

The man is due to appear before Sydney's Central Local Court today.

It is the second time this week customs officers at Sydney Airport have nabbed would-be
smugglers with illegal drugs hidden down their trousers.

A Singaporean national was charged with drug offences after he was allegedly caught
on Monday on arrival from Bangkok, Thailand, with 700 grams of heroin concealed under

Qld: Gang stomped on victim's head in rail bashing, court told

By Johanna Leggatt

BRISBANE, Aug 1 AAP - A man in a coma had his head continually stomped upon by a group
of teenagers who then dragged him across a car park, a court has been told.

Police allege 32-year-old Scott Andrew Lillycrap was set upon at Sunnybank railway
station in Brisbane's south and violently bashed by a group of six youths on Sunday night.

Mr Lillycrap remains in hospital in an induced coma with serious head injuries.

Six teenagers, three of them juveniles, have been charged with attempted murder, deprivation
of liberty, robbery with violence and torture.

Two of the charged, a 16-year-old juvenile who cannot be named, and 17-year-old Bo
Mason Toese, applied for bail but were refused.

The remaining accused, Michael Mikaele, 17, Faavesi Vincent Isaako, 18, and a 15-year-old
youth did not apply for bail.

A second 15-year-old youth from Fairfield in Brisbane's south was charged with the
same offences this afternoon and will appear in Brisbane Children's Court tomorrow morning.

Brisbane Magistrates Court was today told the group stomped on Mr Lillycrap's head
and dragged him across the car park as a group of witnesses watched on in horror.

Police alleged witnesses saw Mr Lillycrap's head repeatedly hitting the concrete as
two of the men dragged him to an old mattress beside a charity bin and dumped him.

The court was told witnesses heard someone in the group yell out: "We've got him enough,
we've got his wallet there's a photo of a kid in it."

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Tina Green said: "The offence was one of a heinous nature
on an innocent person who was minding his own business."

"We're not sure at this stage if he (Mr Lillycrap) has brain damage or will pull through,"

she said.

Magistrate Jim Herlihy told the court: "If all this is true, then what they did is disgraceful."

Mikaele and Isaako will reappear for mention on August 15 and Toese will reappear on
September 25.

The juveniles will appear later in the year, at unspecified dates.

Outside court, Toese's lawyer, Peter Russo, said his client would be contesting elements
of the prosecution's case.

potential-energy surface

potential-energy surface A ultidimensional surface used in the theory of electronic statesof polyatomic molecules and chemical reactions. A potential-energy curve is the simplest type of potential-energy surface. Each internuclear distance in the molecule or reacting system is represented by one dimension, as is the potential energy. This means that if a nonlinear molecule has N atoms its potential-energy surface is a (3N − 6)-dimensional surface in a (3N − 5)-dimensional space. In the case of a linear molecule the potential-energy surface is a (3N − 5)-dimensional space. If the surface has a minimum then that electronic state is stable. It is possible for there to be more than one minimum. In potential-energy surfaces for chemical reactions the reactants and products are frequently ‘valleys’ connected by a region of higher energy, which is associated with the activation energy of the reaction.

2011 THE YEAR AHEAD RETAIL.

The fallout from the recession doesn't appear to have damaged the etail sector, with good prospects for 2011. Indeed, 35% of people interviewed for the most recent nma Online Shopping Survey said they'll spend more online and less on the high street in 2011 (nma 16 December 2010).

Unsurprisingly, price comparison sites, value supermarkets and auction sites topped the places that most consumers are most likely to turn to next year, with the best price being the key factor influencing people's online shopping behaviour.

The survey also revealed that two-thirds of people (69%) said they shop around for the best price and low delivery cost online, while 37% said they buy several items from one site to qualify for free delivery. Over a quarter said they only buy from sites where delivery is included in the price.

Shoppers will be able to buy in more places online in 2011, with mobile commerce likely to become a mainstream channel. Last year saw Marks & Spencer, Lyle & Scott and John Lewis launch m-commerce sites. They were joined by grocery giant Tesco, which launched its first transactional mobile site as part of a drive to make all its sites compatible with smartphones, after finding 7% of its total web users were mobile (nma 11 November 2010).

The importance of a multi-channel strategy was shown by Deloitte, which at the end of 2010 said shoppers who use more than one channel before buying spend 82% more per transaction than those who only shop in stores. Likewise, 38% (by value) of all retail transactions across the clothing, electrical and home sectors are influenced by the internet (nma.co.uk 10 December 2010).

The growth of the tablet market is sure to have an influence, with apps that unite the etail and retail experience becoming important aspects of a marketing plan.

One key trend in ecommerce is disintermediation, combined with crowdsourcing. It's about getting products directly from wholesalers, and now directly from the manufacturer in far off countries, based on what consumers want. We're very excited by where this is going.

A broader trend is the shift to better image quality on ecommerce platforms, and the next step is 3D. It's doing well in the cinema and starting on TVs, and we'll see it in ecommerce too, particularly for more expensive items.

We'll also see the evolution of social ecommerce and the social shopping experience, as exemplified by the Facebook like button and the retailers that have started to integrate it. This will go one step further to enable customers to find out through search what their friends have liked and to use that as part of a buyer sync algorithm.

With regards to discovery, another key area is user-curated commerce, where people put products in folders and you can see what a celebrity or your friends have selected. Linked to this, micro-affiliates is another trend which sees people being rewarded for curating products that their friends buy. Location check-in, with the likes of Foursquare, Facebook Places and Groupon, is another interesting phenomenon. It's about rewarding, and concealing the product from Google in a sense, which is why the private sale and the Groupon model has done so well. It avoids the cannibalisation of your loyal customers and introduces you to potential new consumers, while rewarding those customers for buying from you at a certain point in time or at a certain location.

We'll also see a lot more brands launching their own marketplaces. Both Tesco and ASOS have done so recently, as has Mydeco with Mydeco Boutique.

Finally, one of the obvious things to look to in 2011 is improvements in delivery. The fulfilment side is really important for ecommerce and seeing rapid innovation.

Last year, the masses hit the virtual high streets in droves. The latest IMRG Capgemini Index showed online shoppers spent an incredible #5.2bn in October 2010. This comes as the British Retail Consortium reports that traditional high street spend declined in December for the fourth month in a row.

Online shoppers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, using a variety of online media to research, compare, discuss and purchase products. To be successful in 2011, brands will need to keep pace with this by recognising and creating campaigns around the different stages and influence points in the shopping cycle.

For example, we know consumers shop differently depending on the product they want to purchase. Research shows they prefer to stick with a brand they trust when shopping for products which inspire a more emotional relationship, such as clothing. For major purchases like household goods or high-spec electronics, most online shoppers will take the time to shop around, engaging with a multitude of brands and influencers. We also know that they value online communities where they can share thoughts and opinions about brands and products before they commit to the purchase.

This presents exciting opportunities for brands in 2011, and those that are successful will be the ones which have a strong visibility on platforms that reach consumers across the different stages of the shopping cycle. It will become increasingly important to use a variety of media, such as search, display and social, because consumers are no longer limiting their shopping to one channel.

Success for ad platforms next year will depend on how prepared they are to adapt to meet changing shopper needs. In doing so, they'll also be rewarded with more loyal customers who will engage more strongly with their brand.

STUDY UNVEILS INDENTITY THEFT PREVALENCE IN AUSTRALIA.(Clinical report)

CANBERRA, July 4 Asia Pulse - Nearly one in six Australians has been a victim or known somebody who has been a victim of identity theft or misuse in the past six months, new research shows.

An independent online survey of 1200 people also revealed nine in 10 people were concerned or very concerned about identity theft and misuse.

"It's clear from these results that there is real concern in the Australian community about identity theft and misuse," federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland said on Sunday.

As technology evolved and people undertook more business and transactions online, the risk of identity theft increased, he said.

The survey also revealed the majority of identity theft or misuse occurred over the internet (58 per cent), or through the loss of a credit or debit card (30 per cent).

Stolen identify information was primarily used to purchase goods or services (55 per cent) or to obtain finance, credit or a loan (26 per cent).

Information from the survey, conducted by Di Marzio Research, will be used to help develop a new national identity security strategy, Mr McClelland said.

The government has introduced legislation to parliament aimed at strengthening cyber security laws and Australia's ability to combat international cyber crime.

15m smart-TV adapters installed by 2015.(LIES, DAMN LIES AND STATISTICS)

Is there industry movement that In-Stat doesn't track?

This time it's the smart-TV adapters, like Apple TV, that we used to call digital media adapters and which some are now calling streaming media players or OTT players.

In-Stat says the growth of "Over-the-Top" (OTT) video services like Netflix is generating a great deal of attention for CE products that can stream. It says worldwide shipments of smart TV adapters will be 3.6 million this year. It predicts that the installed base of streaming media players will surpass 15 million by 2015.

Media players are intended for consumers who own a non-Internet-connected flat-panel TV and who do not have a Blu-ray player or video gaming console with their built-in Internet connection. We have long predicted that the pay-TV companies' STBs will eventually come with Internet connectivity. However, it's not clear what online video services they'll offer because they compete with their premium channels and on-demand services. For example, would Comcast offer the $8-permonth, all-you-can-see Netflix or the high-definition movies that Walmart's Vudu offers? Probably not.

Some adapters like D-Link's Boxee, LG's Upgrader and Logitech's Revue offer much more than online video services including browsing, gaming, e-mail, social networking and apps like astrology and the weather.

The road ahead for smart-TV adapters is bumpy. "There are some significant challenges facing the market for streaming media players," according to Mike Paxton, In-Stat research director. "Foremost among them is how to competitively position streaming media players against other products, such as connected Blu-ray players and video game consoles that are more common in both consumer households and in retail electronics stores."

The report said the ability to stream IP video is rapidly becoming a common feature in CE gear instead of the central function of a device. In-Stat said this is driving some of the leading streaming media player vendors to deemphasize their standalone products and focus future product development efforts on their streaming media software platform.

There is another factor that we recently discovered. Retailers such as Walmart and Best Buy are stocking mostly smart TVs and selling them to buyers who don't even have an Internet connection at home. It's easier and probably just as inexpensive to stock only Internet TVs rather than keeping a large inventory of both. We think that by year-end almost every TV available in retail stores will be a smart TV.

However, most smart TVs don't offer the number of non-video apps that are available in adapters like Boxee and LG's Upgrader so there will continue to be a market for them until the TV sets catch up.

Findings in the report include:

--North America accounted for 82% of worldwide shipments of smart-TV adapters last year, 2010. We think Netflix is driving most of the demand in the States so that seems certain to change as Amazon's LoveFilm expands in Europe and subscription services become available in the Pac Rim.

--Apple TV remains the leading streaming media player product on the market. It is the only one, of course, that offers shows from iTunes, and it has a large collection of podcasts and university lectures.

--The increasing availability of Internet-connected TV sets and hybrid set-top boxes will also impact the long-term viability of the streaming media player market.

The In-Stat report is called "Streaming Media Players: Here Today, Gone Tomorrow?" and includes vendor profiles such as Apple, Boxee, Iomega, Logitech, Roku, Sony, TiVo and Western Digital.
