Fed: Australians able to take second citizenship under new laws

Australians will be able to acquire citizenship of another country without riskingtheir Australian passports under new laws to go before parliament this week.

Citizenship Minister GARY HARDGRAVE says the laws -- which could also clear the wayfor US media mogul Rupert Murdoch to reacquire his Australian passport -- reflected ashift in the global labour market.

He says the government will repeal section 17 of the citizenship act which strips Australiansof their nationality when they acquire a dual citizenship.

Mr HARDGRAVE says the new laws would enable Australians to take advantage of opportunitiesoverseas while keeping their links to Australia.

The present laws allow only Australians born overseas to hold dual citizenship.

Mr HARDGRAVE says up to 700 Australians living overseas are forced to lose their citizenshipeach year as they took up other nationalities, often for work purposes.
